Ethiopia: Private Amharic Press
The Forum for Democratic Discussions in Ethiopia, which is formed by homegrown opposition parties and Independents, planned to discuss on controversial issues of the country. The Forum was formed in June 2008 by the Oromo federalist movement, the Coalition of Somali democratic forces, UEDF, the Arena Tigrai, Ato Seye Abrah (Independent) and Dr. Negasso Gidada (Independent). At the press conference on Tuesday August 26, 2008, the members announced that the discussion which will involve the public, professionals and opposition party members will start soon. Some of the issues to be discussed are the problems of the EPRDF’s revolutionary democracy, ethnic and individual rights, the system of the federal government and its structure, peaceful struggle for development of democratic system, national reconciliation, the role of civic societies and political parties, geopolitics and national security, ownership of land, the constitutional system and amendments and election process. After discussing the issues with the public, professionals and party members, the Forum planned to participate in the upcoming national election by taking common stands on the issues.
